TradeWinds Redefines Sustainable Luxury at Sea

TradeWinds is revolutionizing the yachting industry with a clear vision: to merge luxury, comfort, and eco-responsibility in creating unique sailing experiences that respect the environment.

Founded with the goal of promoting sustainable tourism and ocean conservation, TradeWinds aims to become a pioneer in ecological innovation within the luxury cruise sector. By 2036, its fleet is set to consist predominantly of electric-powered yachts fueled by renewable energy.

TradeWinds began its journey toward a fully sustainable fleet in 2019, when it chose to halt the purchase of new vessels until cutting-edge technologies for renewable-energy-powered yachts became available. This commitment took tangible form in January 2024 with the launch of AURORA, the world’s first electric yacht equipped with smart propulsion—marking a new era in the industry. Departing from St. Martin, AURORA offers cruises that combine luxury with environmental consciousness, using solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy systems to ensure a silent, vibration-free, zero-emission voyage.

The summer of 2024 saw the arrival of two additional electric yachts, Twenty5 and Ohana, followed in March 2025 by Hadali, the fourth member of TradeWinds’ electric fleet. The company plans to continue adding new electric yachts each year, moving steadily toward a fully sustainable fleet within the next 10 to 15 years.

All of TradeWinds’ electric yachts are built by the renowned French shipyard Fountaine Pajot, a leader in sustainable innovation. In addition to their electric propulsion systems, these catamarans are equipped with solar panels, wind turbines, and hydro generators that maximize energy efficiency and optimize the use of natural resources. This technology also enables nighttime operation, providing a peaceful, noise-free sailing experience that benefits both guests and the marine ecosystem.

The yacht interiors are designed for both comfort and elegance: expansive foredecks with modular lounges and sunbeds, spacious cockpits, and five guest cabins featuring queen-size beds and private bathrooms—blending refined style with smart functionality. The fleet includes the TW5e (15.5 meters) and TW6e (18.5 meters) models, tailored for small groups seeking privacy and relaxation.

Ricardo Flores, TradeWinds’ Vice President for Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations, emphasized that sustainability is a non-negotiable value, deeply embedded in the company’s identity. Recognizing tourism’s direct impact on fragile ecosystems, Flores highlighted TradeWinds’ proactive role in finding solutions—partnering with other pioneers in the sector to offer more sustainable options for travelers and the planet.

TradeWinds offers itineraries to some of the world’s most exotic and captivating destinations: the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, the South Pacific, and the Indian Ocean. Each TradeWinds holiday features gourmet cuisine prepared onboard by expert chefs, premium beverage service, a professional crew, and activities such as scuba diving (included for yacht owners), fishing, water sports, and personalized guest attention.

Romain Motteau, Chief Operating Officer of Fountaine Pajot, praised the collaboration with TradeWinds, noting that the development of electric yachts was born from a shared commitment to sustainability and ocean protection. He emphasized the yachts’ low environmental impact and silent navigation, ensuring a high-end nautical experience. Motteau concluded by stating that together, the two companies are promoting a sustainable approach to yachting, leveraging eco-friendly technologies that represent a true paradigm shift in the industry.

TradeWinds stands as a shining example of how technological innovation and sustainability can seamlessly blend in luxury tourism—offering environmentally conscious travel experiences without sacrificing comfort or style. In an era where protecting the planet is a global priority, TradeWinds’ dedication shows that the future of yachting can be electric, clean, and responsible—setting a new standard for the entire sector. Their challenge is also an invitation to reflect on how modern luxury must embrace sustainability to endure and leave a positive legacy for future generations.
