Albatros Expeditions and the Green Initiative Program
In recent decades, growing awareness of the environmental damage caused by human activity has prompted many companies to rethink their practices and seek more ecological and sustainable solutions. Albatros Expeditions, a cruise company specializing in exploratory voyages to polar regions, has responded to this challenge with determination by launching its Green Initiative Program.
This program was created with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of its maritime operations, protecting ocean ecosystems, and raising passenger awareness about the importance of responsible travel. Developed in collaboration with the onboard hotel management team, the project includes a series of concrete actions structured around five key pillars: the Save the Waves Program, the Recycling Program, the use of Sustainable Seafood, the review of Toilet Amenities, and the implementation of eco-friendly Cleaning and Laundry Chemicals.

One of the key elements of the Green Initiative Program is the Save the Waves Program, designed to reduce the use of chemicals and the energy consumption associated with washing towels and bed linens. Instead of daily laundering, as is often the case in the hospitality and cruise industries, Albatros Expeditions promotes a more mindful approach by providing passengers with signs in their cabins to indicate when they would like their linens changed. This simple yet effective initiative not only reduces water and detergent usage but also helps minimize the impact on the marine ecosystem. All laundry products used onboard are biodegradable, thereby contributing to the protection of marine biodiversity.
The second pillar is the Recycling Program, which follows the “3 R” principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This approach has been integrated into every aspect of life onboard. For example, plastic bags used for parka jackets are repurposed as liners for waste bins. Additionally, all single-use plastic items such as disposable cups, stirrers, and straws have been eliminated. When needed, paper cups are provided upon request, and reusable water bottles are available for purchase on every voyage.
During special events such as barbecues, only reusable hard plastic cups or regular glassware are used. Straws, if requested, are available only in paper form, and signage is posted to explain this decision in order to engage and inform guests. Furthermore, many plastic items have been replaced with wooden alternatives, and instead of single-portion packages for condiments, yogurt, jam, or butter, shared bowls and reusable containers are used—further helping to reduce waste.

Waste management has also been reimagined with sustainability in mind. All waste generated in work areas is properly sorted, and in the cabins, guests can request bins for paper recycling. Additionally, dedicated recycling stations have been installed in key public areas for passenger use, making active participation in the sustainability program easy and accessible.
Another key aspect of Albatros Expeditions’ environmental commitment is the careful selection of raw materials, particularly the seafood served onboard. The company has chosen to serve only seafood that is responsibly caught or farmed, ensuring the long-term vitality of marine species and the health of our oceans. This approach also considers the livelihoods of fishing-dependent communities, maintaining a balance between environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Species selection follows the standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an independent international organization that certifies sustainable fishing practices. In this way, Albatros Expeditions ensures that every seafood dish served onboard contributes to the protection of marine ecosystems.
Bathroom supplies have also undergone a careful revision. Instead of single-use plastic bottles, each cabin is now equipped with wall-mounted dispensers for shampoo, shower gel, and soap, significantly reducing waste. All provided products are biodegradable and clearly labeled to raise passenger awareness about the ongoing green initiatives. This decision not only reduces plastic use but also encourages greater environmental consciousness among travelers, inspiring them to adopt similar habits even after the cruise.

Another important aspect concerns the use of cleaning and laundry products. All detergents used onboard are phosphate-free, biodegradable, non-toxic or minimally toxic, and non-bioaccumulative. These properties ensure that the products do not leave harmful residues in the marine environment and do not harm wildlife or plant life. Additionally, Albatros Expeditions is actively engaged in researching new preventive measures to stop the spread of plastic microfibers in the ocean—one of the most pressing emerging threats to marine biodiversity.
The Green Initiative Program by Albatros Expeditions stands as a concrete and commendable example of how tourism—even maritime and exploratory tourism—can be reimagined through a lens of sustainability. Through targeted actions, innovative practices, and transparent communication with guests, the company is actively contributing to the protection of the oceans and polar regions. Reducing the ecological footprint onboard, promoting recycling, serving only sustainable seafood, eliminating single-use plastics, and using eco-friendly cleaning products are just some of the actions that reflect Albatros Expeditions’ genuine commitment to responsible tourism.
