Swan Hellenic’s Ocean and Water Mission

On Monday, June 26, 2023 Swan Hellenic actively participated in the Ocean Race Grand Finale celebrations in Genoa, Italy.

The event, organized by the European Commission and the City of Genoa, launched the joint “Transition Plan” of Mayors with the mission “Restoring our Oceans and Waters by 2030”. The aim is to raise awareness of the Ocean and Water Mission. European parliamentarians, Italian government ministers and mayors from all over Italy and Spain contributed to the project.

Andrea Zito, CEO of Swan Hellenic, described how the company’s concrete actions can be an example of how the shipping industry can support the implementation of the Ocean and Water Mission.

A pioneer in the exploration cruise industry, Swan Hellenic is the choice of many travelers of all ages who are drawn to in-depth exploration in the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as the rest of the world, from Brazil to Papua New Guinea, Norway to New Zealand, Australia to Africa, Madagascar to the Mediterranean.

At the heart of Swan Hellenic‘s cruising, Zito continues, is an unwavering and passionate commitment to preserving and raising awareness of lesser-known seas and ecosystems. This translates into significant investment in both their three boutique ships and the latest technologies to ensure their fleet has the lowest possible environmental footprint and emissions.

“We have partnered with numerous Citizen Science initiatives,” Zito continues, “allowing our onboard experts and guests to contribute by collecting valuable data for conservation. These range from reporting cloud data to NASA to recording whale sightings with Happywhale, from monitoring phytoplankton with the Secchi Disk Study to counting Antarctic seabirds with Stony Brook University.”

“Another important step, which is at the heart of our commitment to the Ocean and Water Mission, is to offer our ships as data collection and research platforms in the most remote seas. We have started a partnership with the Fundacion Philippe Cousteau and the Sustainable Development Goals for the Mediterranean, and one of the first initiatives, with many more to follow, will be to measure and monitor the distribution of microplastics and heavy metals.”

On June 27, 2023, the Ocean Summit will be held, the culmination of the Genoa Process, which produced the draft principles of the Declaration on the Rights of the Oceans, which will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly next September.
