Meyer Werft presents its new concept of ships

The Meyer Werft giant unveils its visionary ideas and innovative maritime products at the ongoing Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami this week, emphasizing its technological leadership in the industry.

For the first time, initiatives towards a zero-climate-impact cruise ship concept are being presented as part of the NEcOLEAP research project at the Meyer Turku shipyard.

Alfred Maritime, the digital enterprise of the Meyer Group, introduces the AI-based energy management system; the floating docks and terminals of Meyer Floating Solutions, along with the futuristic visionary concept ORIGIN, complete the displays at the Meyer booth.

The Meyer Energy Management System platform has been developed by Alfred Maritime’s computer experts together with the Meyer Energy Efficiency Team and is designed to increase operational efficiency on ships; this energy management system will support ship operators and crews in understanding and analyzing the ship’s performance.

The platform will provide the crew with useful information to optimize energy efficiency and thus reduce fuel consumption, and cross-checking performance and forecast data from multiple onboard systems will help the crew reduce ship emissions.

Zero-climate-impact cruise ships by 2025

With the AVATAR project, a zero-environmental-impact cruise ship concept is conceived, which is the focus of the NeCOLEAP project research. Meyer Turku aims to develop a zero-climate-impact cruise ship by the end of 2025 and to build it starting from 2030.

The NEcOLEAP research and development project, funded by Business Finland, and Meyer’s work towards a zero-climate-impact ship concept will be presented at the booth. We will also unveil an exciting new concept to make cruising more sustainable in the future,” says Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku.

The AVATAR project includes new concepts of cuisine with automated logistics, alternative materials, sustainable cabin design, and further optimizations of energy efficiency. The holistic approach extends to the end of the product life cycle, emphasizing material selection, recycling, and principles of a circular economy.

Unique product portfolio for the cruise industry

At the Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, Meyer also showcases its unique product portfolio for the cruise industry such as Meyer Floating Solutions with its innovative floating docks and the cruise terminal portfolio, while a ship model, the Icon of the Seas, is also on display.

This ship was delivered by the Meyer Turku shipyard in December 2023 and is among the most innovative and efficient cruise ships in the world: from the installation of the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure ever installed on a cruise ship, to the design of a quantity of water on board never seen before through seven pools, six record-breaking water slides, and more, Icon of the Seas has pushed the boundaries of modern shipbuilding.

“Meyer is the only shipyard capable of offering a complete range, from river cruise ships to large ocean vessels like the Icon of the Seas. With our tradition, innovation, and new products like Meyer Floating Solutions’ docks and floating terminals, we can create added value for shipowners and port operators,” says Thomas Weigend, Executive Vice President Sales of the Meyer Group.

As tradition dictates, Meyer presents a long-term vision for the future of cruising at Seatrade Cruise Global, the Origin project, a new concept of the future that meets future housing needs and global trends, with features independent of weather conditions, to operate all year round. This new model emphasizes rethinking reception areas for efficient passenger flow.

A key feature is the innovative and asymmetrical shape of the superstructure with an advanced transportation system and decentralized public areas that will create new experiences for passengers. The key point of the design concept is a ship without the typical “ship-like” exterior and interior.
