Meyer Werft and Carnival: New Ship Ordered

Following the order of a new cruise ship last February, a new agreement has been reached between Carnival Corporation and Meyer Werft for the construction of the fifth Excel-class ship, which will be delivered to Carnival Cruise Line in 2028.

Since 2018, Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku have built nine LNG-powered cruise ships for four cruise lines in the Carnival Corporation portfolio on a common technical platform, and Bernd Eikens, CEO of the Meyer Group, has stated his pleasure in contributing to Carnival’s success.

Carnival’s Excel class will soon consist of a quintet of very popular ships, offering excellent guest services and tremendous operational efficiency,” says Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Since the launch of the Mardi Gras in 2021 and the subsequent expansion with the Carnival Celebration in 2022 and the Carnival Jubilee in 2023, these Excel-class ships have provided excitement, demand, and high guest satisfaction. With the arrival of the Carnival Florence in April, we are completing the addition of five ships to our fleet in less than 20 months and then moving on to another phase of growth with these two Excel-class ships.”

This second major order obtained within a few weeks demonstrates the trend change in the cruise market, which has reached and partly exceeded the record level of 2019.

Thomas Weigend, Chief Sales Officer of the Meyer Group, stated that following the feedback on the efficiency and success of the Meyer Group’s ships, the shipbuilding platform will continue to be developed. Meyer Werft’s order list now includes six cruise ships, one research vessel, and the steel construction of four offshore converter platforms.
