The International Cruise Summit 2023 in Madrid

The 13th edition of the International Cruise Summit (ICS) took place in Madrid on November 14th and 15th, bringing together leaders and executives from the cruise industry. They explored the strengths of the cruise industry, emphasizing its greater competitiveness compared to traditional travel options like flights and hotels, and showcased its longstanding commitment to sustainability.

Inaugurated by Miguel Ángel Sanz Castedo, Director General of Turespaña, and Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, President of the Ports of Spain, the event drew high-level participants from over 25 cruise companies, ports, tour operators, travel agents, maritime agents, consultants, and companies worldwide. Key discussions included the impact of new European immigration regulations, considerations for mental health for both crew and passengers, and the industry’s responsiveness to the LGTBI+ community.

A significant theme was the value proposition of cruises, with more moderate price increases compared to flights and hotels. The goal is to surpass 2019 passenger figures this year and anticipate a 20% increase by 2024. The introduction of the new EU immigration regulation by Frontex was discussed, anticipating the implementation of a border control system (EES) within a year. This regulation, involving biometric measurements and fingerprints for non-European citizens outside the Schengen area, will require significant adjustments to cruise terminal checks.

Regarding environmental sustainability, the summit highlighted ongoing programs and plans to electrify docks in the coming years. Issues such as mental health for both crew and passengers were emphasized, along with the need to provide training throughout the value chain to prevent uncomfortable or discriminatory situations with the LGTBI+ community.

In the luxury sector, Christopher Prelog, President of Windstar Cruises, emphasized the crucial role of travel agents for luxury cruises. He highlighted the importance of precise trip organization for discerning clients and affirmed Windstar Cruises‘ commitment to Europe and Spain, including the repositioning of a ship in Barcelona and plans for the Canary Islands in 2024.

As part of its sustainability program, CruisesNews Media Group collected used books during the event for the libraries of hospital ships managed by the NGO Mercy Ships, which operates in third-world countries for those in need.

Looking to the future, with the commitment for ICS to become a reference platform for industry leaders to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the dynamic cruise world, dates for the 2024 edition have already been announced, set to take place on November 12-13 at the Hotel Meliá Castilla in Madrid.
