Havila: Sustainability and Environmental Report

Havila Voyages is actively working to reduce emissions and meet future environmental requirements.

“Last year we made history. We were the first cruise line in the world to sail into the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with zero emissions and zero noise,” says CEO Bent Martini.

“This is clear proof and underlines our ambitions. We look forward to continuing our journey and doing our part to make tourism and shipping sustainable.”

Martini notes that Havila Voyages intends to become both carbon neutral and zero emission in the future.

“It starts with the gradual replacement of natural gas with biogas. This will allow us to become carbon neutral by 2028. After that, we will switch to zero-emission alternative fuels such as hydrogen with the ships we already have,” he explains.

Goal achieved

Another goal of Havila Voyages was to reduce food waste onboard to a minimum of 75 grams per person per day. The company’s food concept is to serve all meals a la carte, using only locally sourced ingredients.

“If we can produce 75 grams of food waste on four fully operational ships, for example by eliminating buffets, we can reduce food waste by 60 tons per year,” Martini explains.

“It is therefore gratifying to announce that this year we have achieved our goal of producing only 75 grams of food waste per person per day onboard. We have been able to achieve this thanks to the fantastic efforts of those who developed our food concept, those who prepare and serve the food onboard and, last but not least, our guests who have been made aware of the concept”.

The goal is to make a positive contribution

Havila Voyages‘ ships, equipped with battery packs with a four-hour zero-emission range and silent operation, are the greenest ships ever to sail the historic Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen coastal route. In current operation, CO2 emissions are reduced by 35-40% and local emissions such as NOx and SOx by more than 90% compared to similar vessels powered by conventional fossil fuels.

“Through these reports, we are helping our investors, partners, employees and customers learn more about what we are doing and how we can transform ourselves into an inclusive and environmentally responsible company for the long term. Together, we will lead the way to a greater focus on sustainability. The goal is to be among the first to achieve zero emissions,” Martini concludes.
