AmaWaterways: AmaMagdalena Christened in Colombia

In the historic Colombian city of Mompox, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, luxury river cruise company AmaWaterways celebrated the official christening of AmaMagdalena — the first-ever luxury river cruise ship to sail the waters of the Magdalena River.

This milestone event marks the beginning of a new era for Colombian tourism, focused on sustainability and the celebration of local cultural heritage.

The open-air ceremony, which attracted many locals along the riverbanks, was attended by high-profile authorities including the Governor of the Bolívar Department, the Mayor of Mompox, representatives from the Ministries of Tourism, Transport, and Defense, as well as delegations from ProColombia, Fontur, and Cormagdalena. This strong institutional presence highlights the deep public and private sector support that has accompanied AmaWaterways throughout the development of this project — the result of more than three years of collaboration with Colombian partners.

AmaMagdalena, designed to welcome just 60 guests, is the product of close cooperation with local artisans and professionals. The architectural vision, led by Camilo Restrepo, is inspired by the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region. Interior spaces were crafted by Ocean Projects (Cartagena) and Casa Schlegel Donado, who oversaw handcrafted woodwork and furnishings, respectively.

The ship’s design was strongly influenced by Colombian entrepreneur and designer Marianna Schlegel Donado, originally from Barranquilla, who was also chosen as the ship’s godmother. A former Queen of the Barranquilla Carnival and founder of Casa Schlegel Donado, she infused the cabins with elegance, local craftsmanship, and cultural identity. According to AmaWaterways, the ship “carries the soul of Colombia: its colors, its warmth, and its authenticity.”

Onboard, guests enjoy an exclusive experience with numerous amenities, including a Sun Deck pool, a fitness room, a main restaurant offering Latin American and international cuisine, and the Bolívar Restaurant — an al fresco specialty dining venue.

The cruise program includes two seven-night itineraries: Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Excursions offer unique experiences such as a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, an exclusive jazz concert in Mompox, birdwatching expeditions, and a visit to Palenque — the first free town in the Americas. Pre- and post-cruise land packages are also available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.

For AmaWaterways, AmaMagdalena represents more than just a new ship: it is a symbol of a shared vision, trust built with institutions, and a strong commitment to opening new paths for river tourism in South America. The company emphasizes that this initiative lays the foundation for sustainable tourism development, aimed at creating lasting value for both travelers and local communities.

ProColombia also recognized the importance of the project, describing it as a key initiative to strengthen high-end tourism and promote Colombia as a vibrant, authentic destination rich in natural and cultural beauty. The organization’s president, Carmen Caballero, highlighted that AmaMagdalena’s success is the result of collaboration between the private sector, local communities, and the government.

The christening of AmaMagdalena marks the start of a new era for river tourism in Colombia and demonstrates how synergies between innovation, culture, and sustainability can create real opportunities for the region. Confirming AmaWaterways‘ commitment to the country, a second ship — AmaMelodia — is set to launch by the end of 2025. The company is preparing to further expand its presence in Colombia, continuing its mission of cultural exploration and celebrating the world’s great rivers.
