Teppanyaki Experience on Costa Smeralda

Get ready to wield chopsticks for a unique culinary experience aboard Costa Smeralda, one of the most cutting-edge ships of the moment. Right on board Costa Cruises‘ flagship, you can enjoy an excellent culinary experience at the Teppanyaki Restaurant.

Some call it “show-cooking” or gourmet theater: in Japanese, teppanyaki means “grilling on an iron plate,” combining teppan, meaning “iron plate” in Italian, and yaki, meaning “grilled.” But it’s much more than that; it’s the art of satisfying the palate while also creating a spectacle that astonishes diners. This blend of haute cuisine and showmanship, thanks to the skill of the chefs, becomes a true form of entertainment, transforming dinner into a unique experience. Not surprisingly, teppanyaki is one of the most interesting and glamorous gourmet trends in recent years, increasingly present on new cruise ships.

Menu for Every Taste

Dishes prepared on the spot in front of guests and cooked on the teppan, the griddle inserted into the table. Open your eyes and mouth… delicacies are on the way! The Teppanyaki Restaurant offers three different types of menus: the Chef’s Teppanyaki, offering a choice of 2 starters and 2 main courses with options for meat or fish dishes. For lovers of classic flavors, the Classic Teppanyaki is offered, starting with Otoshi, the typical appetizer served in Japanese taverns, followed by a choice of a main course between red snapper or salmon fillet, calamari accompanied by delicious side dishes, and chicken fillet in Japanese sauce. For an authentic experience, the Vegetarian Teppanyaki is offered, choosing a main course based on seasonal vegetables cooked directly on the griddle, including Japanese Tofu in Teriyaki sauce and Okonomiyaki, delicious Japanese pancakes with tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mayonnaise.

A Healthy and Genuine Cuisine

Beyond the spectacle and deliciousness, this cuisine has the advantage of being very healthy! In fact, only a touch of soy (or olive) oil is used to grease the griddle, retaining all the organoleptic characteristics of the food, almost as if they were raw. The choice of ingredients is vast, thanks to the creativity of the chefs. From beef steak with wagyu beef, grilled and typical of Kobe (the birthplace of teppan), this culinary style has extended to vegetables (including some decidedly unique ones like shiitake, typical Japanese mushrooms, kabocha squash, sweeter than its European counterpart, and soybean and mung bean sprouts, all cooked, as tradition dictates, on the griddle) and fish (mainly seafood and sautéed shrimp).

A Unique Experience

A dinner at the Teppanyaki Restaurant is not just a taste of Oriental flavors but a true experience of involvement and entertainment, with the talented chefs performing acrobatics and even making you sing and applaud to the rhythm of music with each dish preparation! Get ready to experience the egg toss in the air and its millimetric division into two parts with a spatula: so much fun! A typical moment of the show-cooking is the “onion volcano”: onion rings stacked to form a volcano, set on fire until it emits a plume of smoke from the top. The best chefs can magically slice various parts of the fish, such as shrimp tails, making them fly in the air, then catch them before they fall, or even hit the open mouths of the guests: it’s the pinnacle of teppanyaki’s theatrical thrill, strongly mixed with a large dose of humor!

Restaurant with Style

Located on deck 8 of Costa Smeralda, Teppanyaki is one of the 11 restaurants that this marvelous ship offers. A different evening to spend in a soft, oriental-style environment, to closely observe the skill of Japanese chefs. A lounge space in oriental style, curated in both decor and menu. Tables are arranged around the teppan, allowing you to closely witness the magic of dish creation, and the “groups” of diners are always small to ensure a well-curated and engaging atmosphere! A unique, delicious, fun, unforgettable experience: in this show-cooking, you and the chef are the protagonists!
