The Spitsbergen joined the Hurtigruten fleet in 2015/16 after a total refurbishment of the Portuguese car ferry Atlantida, built in 2011. The cabins were built into the original car deck. The passenger capacity of the ship is 335 people (243 beds).
The Spitsbergen is used on both traditional Hurtigruten routes and cruise itineraries. The fresh Scandinavian design of the ship reflects the color palette of the sea.
