Havila Voyages: A Record-Breaking 2024

In 2024, Havila Voyages reached a significant milestone by presenting its first financial report showing a positive operating result—marking a decisive turning point also in terms of environmental sustainability.

After a challenging start, influenced by external factors that delayed both ship delivery and financing, the company finally completed a full year of operations with all four ships active on the Bergen–Kirkenes–Bergen coastal route. The result was an operating profit of NOK 219 million and revenues of NOK 1,529 million, a strong signal of the company’s newfound stability.

Despite the initial difficulties, the company’s leadership remained confident in the project and can now proudly state that revenues have surpassed operating costs. However, the company also emphasizes that financing costs remain high, and one of its top priorities for the future is to identify more economically sustainable solutions.

On the environmental front, the results were even more remarkable. In 2024, Havila Voyages’ four ships generated 35% less CO₂ emissions than the 2017 benchmark levels, when diesel-powered vessels still sailed the route. This achievement far exceeds the 25% minimum reduction requirement set by the Norwegian government in the coastal route contract. Management proudly noted that these figures show how determination and informed choices can meaningfully reduce environmental impact, helping to protect the unique landscapes the ships pass through.

In addition to cutting CO₂, the company eliminated 100% of SOx emissions and reduced NOx by 87% compared to 2017 data. According to the company’s vision, these outcomes are crucial not only for environmental health but also for air quality and the reduction of acid rain along the route.

Onboard, the commitment to sustainability is also evident in the culinary offering, based on locally sourced ingredients from Norwegian producers and a strategy aimed at minimizing food waste. Throughout 2024, Havila Voyages recorded only 68 grams of food waste per passenger per night, well below the target threshold of 75 grams. The decision to move away from traditional buffet service led to a reduction of around 65 tonnes of raw ingredients annually, benefiting both the environment and operational efficiency. The “Best Cuisine” award at the 2024 Wave Awards—often referred to as the cruise industry’s Oscars—further confirmed the strength of the company’s attentive and innovative gastronomic concept.

Havila Voyages’ positive impact also extends to local communities. The company works with around 80 local suppliers along the Norwegian coast to organize excursions and passenger experiences, promoting a model of integrated tourism. This is complemented by the public service role the company fulfills under its state contract, ensuring reliable transport of people and goods—even to the most remote coastal communities.

Looking ahead, Havila Voyages aims to consolidate these achievements and continue supporting the sustainable growth of Norwegian coastal tourism, promoting a model where environmental responsibility, local value, and quality travel experiences come together in harmony.
