Swan Hellenic: a glimpse into a sustainable future

Swan Hellenic, which specializes in expedition tours, cares deeply about the rich environment and culture of the planet and therefore invests in sustainability to preserve this rich heritage for future generations.

To achieve this goal, Swan Hellenic implements concrete actions, both individually and with trusted partners, that are increasingly efficient given the growing complexity of environmental and social challenges facing humanity. It also enables its guests to join in contributing to conservation and climate research during their cultural expedition cruises.

The shipping industry has applied global standards governing its safety, environment and labor, set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and transposed into national legislation for enforcement by relevant government authorities.

Swan Hellenic, however, applies sustainability policies that not only fully comply with these standards, but even exceed these already high requirements by also adopting all additional voluntary standards of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), including with regard to graywater discharge, and thus going beyond the scope of IMO regulations. This makes an expedition with Swan Hellenic one of the most sustainable choices for anyone wishing to explore the planet.

But these are not the only ecological points of the company, as they also contribute:

Ship Technology; all ships in the fleet are equipped with Tier III diesel-electric generation with selective catalytic reduction units to reduce harmful emissions. Each ship’s electrical distribution system allows for extended stays in port without emissions and also enables noise-free, zero-emission sailing through wildlife sanctuaries for several hours at reduced speed. Dynamic positioning systems allow entry into fragile environments, preventing damage to delicate ecosystems. And finally, ultra-low power LED lighting systems, smart air conditioning and advanced drinking water treatment systems are used, eliminating the need for bottled water.

Recycling and sustainable materials; in fact, each ship’s interior design prioritizes natural, recycled and recyclable materials certified for sustainability. Cabin toiletries are supplied in reusable dispensing units made of recycled plastic. Both toiletries and soap and cleaning products used are biodegradable and made from naturally sourced raw materials. Single-use plastic is kept to an absolute minimum on board, encouraging the use of paper straws and refillable glass water bottles, while free metal water bottles are provided for guests to use during excursions. And finally, there is a paperless policy supported by providing comprehensive information to guests on the in-cabin Smart TV system and smartphone app.

Continuous Improvement; Swan Hellenic constantly monitors progress and sustainability commitments to ensure a steady reduction in environmental footprint. In fact, each ship in the fleet has an officer with specific responsibility for environmental issues who ensures full compliance with all of the above and supports continuous improvement.

Swan Hellenic therefore builds strong ties with the cities and communities that host its cruises, ensuring that land and marine environments are explored in a sustainable and respectful manner.
