Swan Hellenic: Discovering the Weddell Sea

Swan Hellenic, a British cruise company specializing in high-end expedition tours with historical or cultural significance, proudly presents its 12-day itinerary aboard the SH Vega, exploring the depths of Antarctica. Departing on January 2, 2024, from Ushuaia, Argentina.

Named after the first ship to navigate the Northeast Passage, the SH Vega is designed for polar travel with style and comfort. With a PC5 ice-reinforced hull and extra-large stabilizers, the ship ensures a smooth journey for its 152 guests cared for by a crew of 120.

Onboard amenities include an infirmary, Basecamp for zodiac embarkation, a library, a spa with sauna, gym, and jacuzzi, a card room, reception, and the main restaurant. The upper decks feature a pool, Observation Deck, onboard shops, Club Lounge, and the Grill.

Accommodations on the SH Vega range from porthole cabins at approximately 19 sqm, comfortable balcony cabins at 28 sqm, to suites at 44 sqm. The most prestigious are the Premium Suites, located aft, featuring balconies of 12 sqm for breathtaking sea views.

Setting sail on January 2, 2024, the ship embarks on a fabulous 12-day itinerary, challenging the treacherous waters of the Drake Passage.

Navigating the thick ice of the Weddell Sea, passengers will witness monumental tabular icebergs in the Gerlache Strait and Antarctic Sound, a rare sight in Antarctic cruises. Emperor penguins, large whales, and albatrosses in flight add to the unique experience, guided by polar experts and professional photographers sharing anecdotes and secrets.

The journey starts in Ushuaia, nestled at the foot of towering mountains along the Beagle Channel. As one of the world’s southernmost cities, Ushuaia maintains its reputation as the “end of the world,” enhanced by its unpredictable climate.

Days two and three are spent navigating the Weddell Sea, allowing passengers to relax in the library, attend polar guide lectures, or refine photography skills with professional advice.

The subsequent five days promise encounters with fascinating glaciers, majestic icebergs, and snow-covered islands, offering the Antarctic Peninsula’s dreamlike scenery.

This area, the most accessible part of Antarctica, hosts scientific bases and intriguing wildlife scenes, such as the Lemaire Channel, a tourist hotspot for its snowy peaks, glaciers, icebergs, and rocky cliffs. Land excursions might include Petermann Island, home to Adelie penguins, blue-eyed shags, skuas, and massive, clumsy elephant seals.

The last two days of navigation precede the return to Ushuaia, allowing passengers to enjoy the ship’s comforts, savor spectacular sea views, indulge in spa treatments, or simply retreat to their cabins for well-deserved rest.

On January 13, 2023, passengers disembark in Ushuaia, a city often described as the “end of the world.” Nestled in Argentine Patagonia, it offers picturesque mountainous views over the Beagle Channel. The city, walkable and with small museums, pubs, restaurants, and cafes, provides an opportunity to savor Patagonian lamb cooked over an open flame before the homeward flight, carrying memories of a beautiful journey in the White Continent.
