Coral Expeditions: discovering the coral reef

Coral Expeditions, in collaboration with the Australian Geographic Society, presents the “Citizen Science on the Great Barrier Reef”, an extraordinary expedition departing from Cairns, a city on the north-eastern coast of Australia, on June 30, 2021 on board the Coral Discoverer.

This is a special departure in which guests will explore some of the most remote areas of the coral reef, being offered the chance to come into close contact with the minke whale and to admire some of the most beautiful coral species that populate the Great Barrier Reef.

There will also be the possibility to swim, snorkel and sail along this living masterpiece, admiring up close the incredibly colorful coral and hundreds of animal species.

In order to make this vacation even safer, Coral Expeditions has implemented health protocols in the pre-departure phase. In fact it will be necessary to have a medical checkup 7 days prior to departure and a PCR test before boarding.

On board there will be some of the most important experts on the Australian Barrier Reef, Dr. Dean Miller of the Australian Geographic Society: biologist, explorer and documentary maker, as well as Dr. Charlie Veron, widely known as the “Godfather of Coral”.

The Coral Discoverer itinerary during the “Citizen Science on the Great Barrier Reef” will be very flexible and can change depending on the weather conditions.

Some of the most exciting experiences you can enjoy on this fantastic expedition which is unlike any that has ever been done before are:

→ Have the chance to swim with minke whales and come into close contact with these beautiful and curious cetaceans that can reach a size of up to 7/9 meters;

→ Be an active part of the collection of coral that will then be transferred and stored in the Living Coral Biobank, the first biobank project for the protection of the coral reef;

→ Share this experience with some of the top marine scientists;

→ Discover the heritage and history of Australia while exploring the city of Cooktown;

→ Learn more about the preservation of the reef and visit the turtle rehabilitation center on Fitzroy Island;
