In the luxury travel landscape, Scenic Group occupies a distinctive position. The group brings together two brands, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Emerald Cruises & Tours, which share a clear philosophy: to create a travel experience in which ships, itineraries, service, and activities are designed as parts of a single, integrated product.
For those who are not yet familiar with the group, understanding its identity means looking beyond the simple distinction between ocean and river cruising. Over the years, Scenic Group has developed a model in which many of the stages that make up the travel experience are managed directly, from ship design to operations, crew training, and the services provided to guests.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours represents the group’s most exclusive offering and includes river cruises as well as ocean yachts dedicated to exploration. Emerald Cruises & Tours, meanwhile, offers a more contemporary and informal interpretation of luxury, with particular attention to design, comfort, and destination discovery. The two brands therefore have their own distinct characteristics, but they share several fundamental elements. In both cases, the ship is not simply considered a place in which to spend a vacation, but an important part of the overall experience.
To better understand this philosophy, it is useful to start with design. For Scenic Group, design is one of the first steps in developing the product. The aim is not simply to create an attractive ship, but to develop spaces and services that are consistent with the type of journey being offered. Cabins, restaurants, public areas, wellness spaces, and outdoor areas are therefore designed around the way guests are expected to use the ship.
This approach allows the ship to be considered as a whole, with the aim of maintaining a certain continuity between the different elements of the experience. Design thus becomes the starting point for a process that continues through construction, ship operations, and onboard service. Scenic Group directly oversees several stages of the product, from the design and development of its ships through to operations and crew training. For passengers, this is not always visible, but it helps maintain a consistent approach across the different components of the cruise.
One of the areas in which Scenic has sought to differentiate itself most clearly is ocean expedition cruising. With Scenic Eclipse, the group developed the concept of the Discovery Yacht: a ship designed to combine exploration with a high level of onboard service. The first vessel entered service in 2019, followed by Scenic Eclipse II in 2023. Both ships are designed to reach remote destinations and offer expedition activities that can include Zodiac and kayak excursions. They also feature a helicopter and a submersible, which are used for selected experiences during certain itineraries. This approach will continue with Scenic Ikon, the new Discovery Yacht scheduled to debut in 2028, which will further develop the concept with a new generation of spaces and equipment dedicated to exploration.
Alongside Scenic, Emerald Cruises offers a more contemporary and informal interpretation of luxury travel, with a portfolio that includes both river cruises and ocean yachts. The brand operates itineraries in Europe along some of the continent’s major rivers, while also expanding its presence in the ocean-cruise segment.
In recent years, Emerald has developed its own fleet of ocean yachts. Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara brought the brand into the Mediterranean and other destinations, with smaller ships and a limited number of passengers. In 2026, Emerald Kaia joined the fleet, representing a new generation of Emerald yachts and further expanding this offering. The ocean fleet will continue to grow with the arrival of Emerald Raiya in 2027 and Emerald Xara in 2028, two new yachts that will further expand the brand’s presence in the small-ship luxury cruise segment. The result is an offering that allows travelers to choose between river cruises and ocean voyages while retaining several common characteristics, including smaller ship sizes, contemporary design, and a more informal atmosphere.
Another important aspect for anyone considering a Scenic or Emerald cruise is the fare structure. The group focuses on an offering that includes many services that, with other cruise companies, may be purchased separately. Depending on the brand and itinerary, inclusions may cover beverages, dining, excursions, transfers, gratuities, Wi-Fi, and wellness services.
The inclusions can naturally vary depending on the cruise selected, but the philosophy is relatively straightforward: to minimize the need to continually purchase additional services during the journey. For passengers, this primarily means greater simplicity when planning and managing their vacation. A significant part of the experience is already defined at the time of booking.
The size of the ships is another important difference compared with the major cruise lines. Scenic and Emerald operate smaller vessels, carrying significantly fewer guests than the large floating resorts that can accommodate thousands of passengers. This inevitably changes the way the cruise is experienced. Public spaces are more intimate, the relationship with the crew is more direct, and activities and excursions are managed on a different scale.
This does not necessarily mean having fewer things to do. Rather, it means an experience in which the destination, service, and time onboard have greater importance than the number of attractions. For travelers who enjoy large ships with numerous restaurants, shows, and activities, this is therefore a very different type of cruise. For those who prefer a quieter ship, attentive service, and more time dedicated to discovering the places they visit, it can be an interesting alternative.
For those discovering Scenic and Emerald for the first time, the simplest question is also one of the most useful: what does the group offer that is different from other cruise companies? There is no single answer. The difference lies instead in the combination of several elements: smaller ships, purpose-driven design, service, an inclusive approach, a strong focus on destinations, and the possibility of choosing between river cruises, ocean yachts, and expedition voyages.
Scenic and Emerald are not primarily focused on the number of restaurants, large attractions, or the size of the ship. Their offering is built around a different idea: ensuring that the ship, service, and destination work together. This is perhaps the simplest way to understand Scenic Group. It is not simply a group offering luxury cruises, but a company that has chosen to oversee many of the stages that make up the travel experience, starting with the design of its ships.
Scenic and Emerald therefore represent two different ways of approaching luxury travel within the same group. With an expanding fleet and new yachts already planned for the coming years, Scenic Group is an option worth considering for travelers looking for an alternative to large cruise ships and seeking a more intimate, destination-focused experience.
