Silver Spirit: the first infection-proof ship

On August 24, 2020 the Silver Spirit became the first luxury cruise ship to obtain the certification for the maritime prevention of infection (CIP-M) from DNV GL, a world-class certification company. The certification of Silversea Cruises is the final step in their updating and preparation of new protocols which has already been underway for some time.

The CIP-M program draws on the experience of more than 4,000 audits in more than 640 hospitals in the entire world. The experts of the Cruising Center of DNV GL Maritime in Miami and medical professionals have created a program by modifying protocols for the prevention of infection in health settings on land for use in ships. This is the most complete certification for the prevention of infection available in the maritime sector.

We are proud to become the first ultra-luxury cruise line to obtain the certification in the prevention of infections for the maritime sector, a demonstration of our strong commitment to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our guests, crew and the destinations we visit.” stated Roberto Martinoli, President and CEO of Silversea. “Contuining from the work of Royal Caribbean’s Healthy Sail Panel, we are rigorously working to improve our already excellent hygiene-health procedures on board. Starting with the Silver Spirit, we will continue to work with DNV GL to obtain certification for the rest of our fleet to offer the safest possible conditions when we return to navigation, when it is the right moment to do so.”

The new three-year certification of Silver Spirit is specific and valid only to the ship in question. On August 14, 2020 a thorough inspection of the ship was completed. The areas of the audit include:

– the prevention and response plan for the Covid-19 epidemic of the cruise company,

– leadership in prevention of infection and lines of communication,

– management of the medical equipment,

– processes of infection risk management.

“We are happy to award Silversea our Certification in the Prevention of infections (CIP-M) for the maritime sector, that was developed as a holistic solution to the prolonged pressures to which the maritime and cruise industry are subjected,” declared Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime. “As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to create a high-level of public concern about maintaining health and safety on board cruise ships, we hope that our new certification serves a double purpose of contributing to building passenger and crew trust while improving, at the same time, the EHS standards of the cruise industry.”

Through yearly onboard inspections and audits of the company offices on land, DNV GL will verify that the company maintains the standards to confirm their continued merit of the certification. It is an effective, careful and constantly updated control, therefore, which will allow the Silver Spirit to represent a ship of excellence in the field of health and safety.

This is a small element of optimism within the larger picture of the difficulties facing the world cruise industry in these months of pandemic and suspension of activities by all the cruise ship companies.
