Viking Cruises Expands Its Presence on the Nile
Viking continues to invest decisively in the Egyptian river cruise market with the announcement of two new vessels dedicated to the Nile: Viking Ptah and Viking Sekhmet, scheduled to debut in September and November 2026 respectively.
The “float out” ceremony — the moment a ship touches the water for the first time — represents both a symbolic and strategic milestone in shipbuilding, marking the completion of the vessel’s external structure and the beginning of the final technical outfitting and interior installations. The ceremony took place at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, confirming the strong relationship between Viking and the Egyptian market, now considered one of the most dynamic sectors in the cultural cruise industry.

With these new additions, Viking further expands one of the most modern fleets currently sailing the Nile, which already includes the sister ships Viking Osiris, Viking Aton, Viking Sobek, Viking Hathor, Viking Amun, and Viking Thoth. This strategy demonstrates the company’s intention to consolidate its leadership in the premium experiential river cruise segment.
The new ships will accommodate 82 guests in 41 elegantly designed staterooms created according to the brand’s signature standards. Interiors will feature clean lines, natural materials, and the unmistakable Scandinavian style that distinguishes Viking worldwide. Among the most appreciated onboard features is the Aquavit Terrace, an indoor/outdoor panoramic area designed to offer a more immersive and relaxing sailing experience along the Nile.
According to Torstein Hagen, Egypt continues to attract travelers from around the world thanks to its unique combination of archaeological heritage, millennia-old culture, and the timeless charm of the Nile. In recent years, the country has experienced significant growth in luxury tourism, also supported by the opening of new cultural infrastructures and museums.
The two new vessels will operate Viking’s flagship Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, one of the most sought-after programs in the company’s portfolio. The 12-day journey combines land stays with river cruising, offering a complete immersion into the history of ancient Egypt.
The experience begins in Cairo with visits to some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, including the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Saqqara necropolis, and the modern Grand Egyptian Museum, destined to become one of the world’s leading museums dedicated to Egyptian archaeology.

Guests then travel to Luxor, often considered one of the world’s greatest open-air museums, to begin an eight-day Nile cruise accompanied by expert Egyptologists. The itinerary includes some of ancient Egypt’s most iconic sites, such as the Valley of the Kings, the temples of Karnak and Luxor Temple, the temple complex of Dendera Temple Complex, the majestic Abu Simbel Temples, and the Aswan Dam.
The expansion of Viking’s Nile fleet reflects an increasingly evident trend in the cruise industry: growing demand for cultural, authentic, and highly experiential travel. More and more travelers are seeking itineraries capable of combining comfort, historical insight, and meaningful exploration of the destination.
With Viking Ptah and Viking Sekhmet, Viking not only strengthens its presence in Egypt, but also confirms the central role of the Nile in the international river tourism landscape, focusing on an exclusive product designed for travelers who view travel as a complete cultural experience.
