Palermo Celebrates 30 Years of MedCruise

The 68th General Assembly of MedCruise, the Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports, has concluded in Palermo, marking a particularly significant milestone this year: the 30th anniversary of the Association’s foundation.

From June 9 to 12, 2026, the Sicilian capital welcomed more than 240 participants from around the world, including representatives of member ports, cruise lines, associate members, international media, and industry stakeholders, transforming the city into the leading meeting point for the Mediterranean cruise industry for four days.

The event, hosted and co-organized by the Western Sicily Sea Port System Authority, recorded unprecedented figures that demonstrate the growing international importance of MedCruise. A total of 27 cruise lines took part in the Assembly, while more than 700 B2B meetings were organized between ports, destinations, and cruise companies—the highest number ever recorded in the history of the Association’s General Assemblies.

The 2026 edition represented far more than an annual gathering. The celebration of the Association’s 30th anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of MedCruise and its contribution to the development of the Mediterranean as one of the world’s leading cruise regions.

For the occasion, Palermo welcomed not only the Association’s current leadership but also honorary presidents and former secretaries-general, who played a key role in MedCruise’s growth over the past three decades. It was a symbolic moment that allowed participants to reflect on the achievements accomplished and the new challenges facing the sector.

MedCruise President Theodora Riga described the 68th General Assembly in Palermo as a historic moment for the Association. According to Riga, the celebration of the 30th anniversary, combined with record participation from members, cruise lines, and industry stakeholders, as well as the addition of 15 new members, clearly demonstrates the strength and growing relevance of MedCruise within the international cruise industry.

The President also emphasized that Palermo provided the ideal setting for celebrating this important milestone, not only because of its well-established maritime and tourism heritage, but also due to its historical role within the Association, having been one of MedCruise’s founding destinations.

During the working sessions, delegates addressed some of the most pressing issues shaping the future of the cruise industry. Key topics included the impact of geopolitical tensions on cruise itineraries and ship deployment, the transformation of cruise operations and passenger expectations, the evolution of communications in an environment increasingly influenced by digitalization and artificial intelligence, and the role of destinations in balancing tourism growth, sustainability, and the preservation of local identity.

Significant attention was also devoted to accessibility, inclusion, technological innovation, strategic relationship management, and collaboration among cruise lines, ports, and destinations. One of the most noteworthy moments was the special panel dedicated to three decades of the Mediterranean cruise industry, during which speakers and institutional representatives examined the sector’s evolution through the key concepts that have defined its growth: innovation, sustainability, resilience, and partnership.

Particular interest was generated by the presentation of the latest MedCruise State of the Industry report, delivered by Professor Thanos Pallis. The study provided an updated overview of market performance, operational trends, and future prospects for the cruise sector in the Mediterranean and adjacent seas. The findings confirm the region’s increasingly strategic role in the global cruise market while highlighting the key challenges and opportunities that will shape the coming years.

The strong participation recorded in Palermo represents a tangible sign of the confidence that the industry continues to place in the Mediterranean as a priority growth area, despite geopolitical complexities and emerging environmental and social sustainability requirements.

Alongside the conference programme, participants had the opportunity to experience Sicily’s cultural, artistic, and maritime heritage firsthand. The excursion programme included visits to Palermo’s UNESCO World Heritage monuments, itineraries dedicated to the splendors of Sicilian Baroque architecture, exploration of the ancient underground Qanat system, technical visits to port infrastructures, and memorable maritime experiences aboard the historic vessel Lisca Bianca. Visits to Monreale and other iconic locations across the island were also highly appreciated, allowing international delegates to immerse themselves in Sicilian culture and traditions.

Networking activities were complemented by an extensive social programme, featuring among its highlights the Gala Dinner hosted at the prestigious Villa Boscogrande and the Farewell Dinner at Villa Tasca, which also served as the venue for the Association’s official 30th anniversary celebrations.

The 68th General Assembly concludes with an extremely positive outcome. The record figures achieved, the high level of cruise line participation, and the success of the B2B meetings reaffirm MedCruise’s role as the leading platform for dialogue and cooperation between Mediterranean destinations and the global cruise industry.

As it enters its fourth decade of activity, the Association renews its commitment to international cooperation, innovation, and sustainable growth, with the objective of further strengthening the competitiveness of the Mediterranean within the global cruise market.
