NCL: Luis Fonsi Named Godfather of Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that Luis Fonsi, GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, musician and producer and five-time Latin GRAMMY winner, will serve as Godfather of Norwegian Viva, the line’s second innovative first-class ship, which will be christened in Miami.

Best known for his extensive list of radio hits, including the award-winning global smash “Despacito”, Fonsi will christen and officially name Norwegian Viva at the christening ceremony in Miami on November 28.

Norwegian Viva‘s “Live it Up!” celebration will then continue throughout the evening with other prominent Latin artists joining Fonsi, including the Queen of Latin Pop, Paulina Rubio; “Saturday Night Live” cast member and Miami native, Marcello Hernandez; and singer Pedro Capó.

“We are thrilled to welcome Latin music icon Luis Fonsi to the NCL family as the Godfather of Norwegian Viva,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Miami, our hometown, is steeped in Latin culture, and we want to celebrate the debut of Norwegian Viva with the presence of a Latin talent like Luis, whose energy, positivity and music bring people together from around the world, making him the perfect complement to the vibrant energy of Norwegian Viva.”

Following its christening voyage, Norwegian Viva will arrive in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December 2023, and will offer a variety of seven-day Caribbean itineraries through April 2024 with stops in Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St John’s, Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Philipsburg, St. Maarten and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, before the summer season in Europe with cruises to Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; Rome (Civitavecchia) and Venice (Trieste), Italy.

“I am so honored to be named Godfather of NCL’s new ship, Norwegian Viva, and I can’t wait to share it with the amazing people of Puerto Rico, a community that truly represents the spirit of living,” said Luis Fonsi. “Growing up on an island, the ocean plays such an important role in my life and there is nowhere else I would rather be. Cruising offers such an incredible vacation experience and I can’t wait to christen this incredible ship.”

Norwegian Viva will debut in August 2023, offering voyages to the Greek Islands and Mediterranean through November before homeporting in San Juan for the Caribbean season.
