Explora I christened in New York

Explora I, the first of the six luxury ships by Explora Journeys, was christened at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York, following the highly anticipated arrival of the ship in the United States in recent days.

This was a significant ceremony held in New York, not only because it marks the official christening of the first ship in the Explora Journeys fleet but also because it inaugurates Explora I‘s presence in the U.S. market. It’s essentially a new introduction to the general public, allowing them to get to know and experience the innovative cruise concept developed by the Msc Cruises Group. This all took place in an extraordinary setting, highlighting Explora Journeys’ international inclination and emphasizing the importance of the U.S. market for the emerging brand of the Group.

The event’s godmother was marine biologist Sylvia Earle, founder and president of Mission Blue, who showed great enthusiasm for the recognition that Explora Journeys bestowed upon her. The scientist had previously been named the godmother for another brand, and her selection also stems from the collaboration that Mission Blue will establish with the brand and the Msc Foundation for ocean conservation.

Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys, confirmed, “Today’s event represents a milestone: with Explora I, we are making our vision of reshaping luxury travel a reality. We are proud to introduce a new concept of exploration and luxury travel and to present our first ship in the city of New York.”

Today marks the conclusion of the launch of Explora I, the flagship of a new company, which will pave the way for a series of other ships that Explora Journeys has commissioned to expand its fleet. This revolutionary concept will be championed by the first unit while waiting to be joined by Explora II, starting in the summer of 2024. Explora III and Explora IV will both be powered by LNG and enter service in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Explora V and Explora VI will be operational in 2027 and 2028, both featuring state-of-the-art energy efficiency measures and the capability to use alternative fuels like biogas and synthetic gas.

For the current autumn phase, Explora I will remain in North America, then move to the Caribbean for the winter, offering unique discovery and in-depth itineraries, always in line with the Ocean State of Mind philosophy, focusing on onboard well-being and relaxation. In the spring of 2024, it will position itself on the west coast of the United States, reaching Hawaii and then returning to Europe for the summer season.
