Emerald Cruises: The Christening of Emerald Astra

Emerald Cruises & Tours officially christened the new Emerald Astra in Amsterdam on 31 May 2026, marking an important milestone in the expansion of its European river cruise fleet.

The event represents a significant step for the brand, which continues to strengthen its presence along the continent’s major waterways, including the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. The naming ceremony highlighted not only the company’s growth, but also the evolution of the river cruise sector toward an increasingly experiential, contemporary, and luxury-oriented model.

The star of the ceremony was Toni Lanotte-Day, a US travel advisor, entrepreneur, and one of Scenic Group’s top global sellers, who was appointed godmother of the ship. Her designation reflects a broader message: the growing importance of travel advisors in shaping and promoting luxury travel brands.

The connection between the godmother and Emerald Cruises is built on real experiences: from tulip-season cruises in the Netherlands, featuring immersive activities with local artisans, to scenic sunrise arrivals into Venice aboard Emerald Yacht Cruises, complete with Bellinis served on deck. In maritime tradition, the role of godmother is associated with good luck, protection, and wishes for prosperous journeys. Lanotte-Day emphasized that, for her, this role also represents the wider community of travel advisors who believe in the product and help bring it to life for their clients.

Featuring an elegant exterior design and bright, contemporary interiors developed by Scenic Group’s in-house shipbuilding division MKM Yachts, Emerald Astra introduces a new interpretation of river cruising. The aim is to offer guests an experience that combines exploration and comfort, cultural immersion and relaxation. As Lanotte-Day noted, the ship conveys from the moment of boarding “a feeling of relaxed joy,” designed for travelers who wish to experience destinations fully while still enjoying a familiar and refined onboard atmosphere.

Glen Moroney, Founder and Chairman of Scenic Group, stated that Emerald Astra reflects the global growth vision of the Emerald Cruises brand: a contemporary, immersive product deeply connected to the destinations it sails through. He also highlighted the symbolic importance of the godmother’s appointment, emphasizing the central role of travel advisors in the group’s development and future growth.

With the debut of Emerald Astra, Emerald Cruises & Tours further consolidates its expansion strategy in the European luxury river cruise segment. The new vessel represents not only an addition to the fleet, but also a step forward in the evolution of the river cruising experience.

The growth journey will continue in the coming years with the introduction of Emerald Lumi on the Seine in 2027, reaffirming the group’s ambition to strengthen its presence in key European markets and redefine the standards of contemporary river tourism.
