Costa Toscana, another tribute to Italy

On the 30th of July, the first sheet of the Costa Toscana was cut and its name revealed during the event. The ship, a liquefied natural gas vessel, will join the Costa Cruises fleet in May 2021.

Costa Toscana will be the sister ship of Costa Smeralda, already under completion at the same Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku. The use of LNG represents a major turning point in terms of minimizing environmental impact, a factor that is always dear to Costa Cruises.

“The cutting of the first sheet of the Costa Toscana is indeed another important step in our sustainable development plan. The LNG propulsion applied to cruise ships is an innovation destined to mark a path of transformation, a major turning point, as it guarantees a substantial reduction in environmental impact without compromising the safety aspects that are essential and priority for us. Once again Costa Cruises sets the course in the sector: having been the first to believe in this technology, which is becoming more and more widespread, further reinforces our overall vision; there is still much to be done in terms of infrastructure to make it even easier to use”. These are the words of Neil Palomba, General Manager of Costa Cruises, present at the event. “Costa Toscana and its sister ship Costa Smeralda represent a significant innovation in terms of products, in which Italian hospitality remains central and distinctive trait of our brand since its inception, able to involve and give emotions to both new and more experienced cruise passengers”.

The young Jan Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, was also present and enthusiastic, recalling “A modern shipyard for modern ships. Both these two ships for Costa, with the Costa Smeralda to be delivered next October, will have a beautiful design and many interesting features – and of course they are the result of high quality work and the best industrial engineering. We are very proud to build these two ships for Costa”.

The two new ships represent a further tribute to Italy, inspired by two of the most famous and appreciated areas. The ship will offer 11 different restaurants, one of which is designed for families, 19 bars, a splendid spa area with 16 treatment rooms, an aquatic park with slides, 4 swimming pools and an area entirely dedicated to children.
