This autumn, Clipper Stad Amsterdam is keeping its sailing program close to home, with a series of departures from the Netherlands and Belgium before heading north to Denmark. Alongside day sails from Ostend, Rotterdam and Scheveningen, the tall ship is adding two distinctive seasonal voyages: a crossing into the heart of London and a five-day youth sailing program around Copenhagen.
The September schedule includes opportunities to experience Stad Amsterdam on shorter coastal sailings, with day sails from Scheveningen on September 18 and 19. These departures are designed as an introduction to life aboard the clipper, giving guests the chance to spend a full day under sail and experience the atmosphere of a traditional tall ship without committing to a longer voyage.
The autumn program then shifts toward more immersive journeys, including a voyage to London and, in October, a dedicated youth trip departing from Copenhagen. The latter is aimed at participants between the ages of 15 and 25 and is built around active participation rather than passive cruising. Over five days in Danish waters, participants are invited to become part of the working life of the ship. Under the guidance of Stad Amsterdam’s professional crew, they learn the fundamentals of traditional sailing, including steering, navigation, sail handling and taking the helm. No previous sailing experience is required.
The experience is deliberately hands-on. Days are spent learning how the vessel is operated and responding to the rhythms of sailing, while evenings are more relaxed, with the ship anchoring in sheltered bays where participants can share meals and spend time together away from the more formal structure of life ashore. The voyage is being organised in collaboration with the Denmark Sail Training Association, Svendborg Sejlerskole and the Enkhuizer Zeevaartschool, reinforcing the educational focus of the program. The emphasis is not simply on spending time aboard a historic-style vessel, but on understanding how a tall ship is sailed and what it means to work as part of a crew.
That distinction is central to the appeal of the Copenhagen youth voyage. Rather than following a conventional cruise format, the experience asks participants to contribute, learn new skills and take responsibility on board. The result is closer to sail training than leisure cruising, with the ship itself becoming both the setting and the subject of the journey.
For Stad Amsterdam, the program also highlights the versatility of a vessel capable of moving between public day sails, destination voyages and educational experiences within the same season. The autumn schedule combines accessible short departures with more immersive journeys, giving different types of travellers the opportunity to engage with traditional sailing at different levels.
The Copenhagen youth voyage in particular stands out as one of the most participatory experiences in the ship’s seasonal program, offering younger travellers the chance to learn by doing and to experience the discipline, teamwork and freedom that come with life under sail.
