Celebrity Cruises has reached another major milestone on its path toward entering the river cruise market. Celebrity Compass, the first ship in the upcoming Celebrity River Cruises fleet, has successfully completed its float out, marking one of the most significant stages in the vessel’s construction.
The milestone signals the completion of the ship’s exterior construction and the first time Celebrity Compass has touched the water, bringing the company another step closer to the launch of its new river cruise product in August 2027.
As the inaugural vessel of Celebrity River Cruises, Celebrity Compass will establish the blueprint for a fleet designed to translate many of the brand’s signature ocean-cruise elements to some of the world’s most iconic waterways. Contemporary design, destination-focused experiences, elevated hospitality, and new technical solutions will form the core of Celebrity’s approach to the increasingly competitive premium river cruise segment. The multi-day float-out process began on Wednesday, September 9, at the Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam. Following the successful operation, Celebrity Compass embarked on her first journey, traveling approximately 80 kilometers by river before arriving at TeamCo Shipyard in Heusden on Saturday, September 12. The vessel will now enter the next stages of construction and outfitting ahead of her 2027 debut.

A defining feature of Celebrity River Cruises will be the strong connection between the ship and the surrounding landscape. Expansive open decks have been designed to provide uninterrupted 360-degree views, extending the brand’s emphasis on indoor-outdoor living into the river cruise environment. Among the most distinctive concepts aboard Celebrity Compass will be Magic Edge, described by the company as the first cantilevered dining pods ever introduced on a river cruise ship. The spaces will allow guests to dine above the river while enjoying menus inspired by the regions visited along the itinerary. An infinity-edge plunge pool will provide another outdoor focal point, giving passengers the opportunity to relax while remaining visually connected to the passing scenery.
Celebrity has also placed considerable emphasis on accommodations. Celebrity Compass will feature five stateroom categories with residential-inspired interiors, generous natural light, intuitive storage solutions, and king-size beds in every cabin. Spacious balconies and carefully considered layouts are intended to maximize the sense of space onboard, an especially important consideration within the dimensional constraints of river vessels. Dining will be another central part of the experience, with eight restaurants and bars planned across the ship. Several familiar Celebrity venues will make the transition from ocean to river cruising, including Martini Bar, Sunset Bar, and Café Al Bacio. The company is also emphasizing flexibility, with complimentary breakfast room service, all-day dining options, and what Celebrity describes as the only 24/7 meal availability in the river cruise sector.

From a technical perspective, Celebrity Compass will feature an innovative hull designed to provide a lightweight and versatile platform suited to river navigation. A hybrid propulsion system and advanced onboard technologies are intended to reduce both noise and vibration, improving comfort for guests while also supporting operations in the historic towns and urban environments typically visited on European river itineraries. “The float out of Celebrity Compass is a defining milestone as we bring our vision for Celebrity River Cruises to life,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “With Celebrity Compass, we're reimagining river cruising The Celebrity Way, combining elevated design, exceptional hospitality, and destination-rich experiences to create a journey unlike any other on the river.” With Celebrity Compass now transferred to Heusden, construction enters a new phase ahead of the ship’s scheduled debut in August 2027.
The launch will represent more than the introduction of a new vessel. It will mark Celebrity Cruises’ official entry into river cruising and the beginning of a new chapter for a brand historically associated with premium ocean voyages. As the first ship in the fleet, Celebrity Compass will therefore carry the additional task of establishing Celebrity’s identity and positioning in a market already populated by a broad range of established premium and luxury operators.
