Windstar Cruises has completed the full refurbishment of Wind Star, the 148-guest sailing yacht that, four decades ago, helped redefine the cruise experience with a more intimate, authentic style inspired by private yachting.
The renovation marks a major milestone in Setting Sails, the cruise line’s multi-year fleet renewal program designed to modernize its iconic Wind Class vessels while preserving the timeless spirit that has defined them since their debut.
Introduced in the 1980s, Wind Star was among the first ships to offer an alternative to traditional cruising, thanks to her authentic sailing rig, intimate size, and atmosphere reminiscent of an elegant private yacht. Today, following an extensive transformation, the yacht features completely redesigned interiors, a more contemporary aesthetic, and enhanced comfort, while retaining the distinctive character that has made her an icon in the luxury small-ship segment.
The completion of Wind Star’s refurbishment marks the end of the second phase of the Setting Sails program, making her the first Wind Class yacht to complete both phases of the fleetwide modernization project. The initiative is designed to progressively refresh the fleet with a yacht-inspired approach that combines sophisticated design, meticulous attention to detail, and a more personalized style of hospitality. Every aspect of the onboard experience has been enhanced, from public spaces and accommodations to dining venues and guest services.
Stijn Creupelandt, Chief Operating Officer of Windstar Cruises, explained that the transformation of Wind Star was inspired by a desire to celebrate the company’s heritage while embracing the future. According to Creupelandt, the yacht has always held a special place within the Windstar fleet, and the refurbishment was carefully designed to preserve the features guests value most while elevating every aspect of the onboard experience.
The heart of the transformation lies in the ship’s dining and social venues, which have been reimagined to provide an even more refined and relaxed atmosphere. The signature Amphora restaurant has been completely redesigned with new flooring, wall finishes, ceiling treatments, custom seating, and elegant furnishings, creating a sophisticated contemporary setting. Veranda has also undergone a significant upgrade, featuring refreshed interiors and a redesigned buffet layout that offers a smoother, more casual dining experience while maintaining the ambiance of a luxury yacht.
Guest accommodations have been further enhanced with new comfort features, including upholstered headboards, integrated lighting, and more conveniently positioned bedside charging stations. These improvements build on the upgrades introduced during the first phase of the project, which included enhanced onboard technology, Starlink connectivity, new on-demand televisions, and the complete redesign of the Owner’s Suite.
The refurbishment also extended to some of the yacht’s most popular public spaces, including the lobby, Compass Rose Lounge, Yacht Club Café, and the pool deck. Wellness facilities received special attention as well, with the complete renovation of the World Spa by Windstar and upgrades to the fitness center.
Completing the yacht’s refreshed look are specially commissioned artworks created in partnership with Miami’s Fountainhead Art gallery, along with new lighting, state-of-the-art sound systems, teak decking, and numerous carefully crafted design details that reinforce the warm "home at sea" atmosphere that defines the Windstar experience.
The transformation of Wind Star is only the first step in the broader evolution of the Wind Class fleet. The next vessel to undergo the second phase of the Setting Sails program will be the 342-guest Wind Surf, scheduled for completion in December 2026, followed by Wind Spirit in March 2027. The ultimate goal is to create a fully renewed and consistent fleet that combines the timeless appeal of sailing with a modern vision of relaxed, personalized luxury.
Forty years after her debut, Wind Star continues to embody the essence of the Windstar philosophy: intimate voyages, authentic destinations, and a style of cruising that emphasizes a genuine connection with the sea and the places visited.
