From January 9 to 23, 2027, EUROPA 2 is scheduled to undergo a refurbishment in Singapore, with an extensive programme of interior improvements. Among the most significant changes will be the installation of approximately 250 new sofas, individually manufactured by German furniture specialist COR. The project continues a partnership that dates back to the ship's introduction and reflects an approach to luxury based on craftsmanship, material quality and design continuity.
Luxury at sea is increasingly defined by the quality of the spaces in which guests spend their time. The comfort of a private suite, the texture of its furnishings and the harmony of its design contribute significantly to the overall cruise experience. For Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, these elements are central to the identity of EUROPA 2, a ship whose contemporary elegance has long been one of its distinguishing characteristics.

EUROPA 2 has built its reputation around spacious accommodation, understated elegance and a relaxed interpretation of luxury cruising. Its suites are conceived as private living environments, with generous proportions and furnishings intended to make extended periods at sea particularly comfortable. Replacing the sofas across the accommodation is therefore an important intervention, influencing both the appearance of the interiors and the everyday experience of guests. The new furniture has been developed specifically for the ship, with the design taking into account the existing architectural concept and the technical requirements of a marine environment. Upholstery, materials and construction must withstand the particular climatic conditions encountered at sea while meeting applicable fire safety standards. The challenge is to combine these practical necessities with the tactile qualities and refined appearance expected aboard a luxury vessel. The work involves a remarkable amount of preparation. Approximately ten 40-foot containers are being prepared to transport the carefully packed sofas to Singapore. Behind this logistical operation lies a lengthy process involving technical drawings, material samples, design proposals and visualisations. Representatives of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises have also visited COR's production facilities to examine materials and coordinate the customisation of the furnishings.

Based in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, in Germany's East Westphalia region, COR has been producing upholstered furniture for more than seven decades. The family-owned company has developed a reputation for combining traditional manufacturing expertise with contemporary forms and materials. Its production incorporates carefully selected textiles and leather, including materials sourced from Italy and southern Germany. For EUROPA 2, most of the new upholstered furniture will feature premium wool fabrics produced by German textile manufacturer ROHI. Wool offers a distinctive texture and visual warmth, qualities that complement the residential character of the suites. The colour schemes and finishes will be integrated into the ship's established interior identity, creating a refreshed environment while maintaining the continuity of its original design.
The interior concepts are developed by Hamburg-based design studio Cubik3, which has been involved with EUROPA 2 since the ship's earliest planning stages. This longstanding relationship is particularly relevant to a refurbishment of this nature. Understanding the original architectural concept allows new elements to be introduced in a manner consistent with the ship's overall aesthetic. The programme also extends beyond the replacement of sofas. Existing COR Shrimp armchairs in the suites will be reupholstered, giving these pieces a renewed appearance while preserving their place within the interiors. COR chairs in the Belvedere lounge will remain, while additional furniture will include COR tables and new Kagu armchairs, designed by Jehs + Laub, for the Owner Suites. The ship's theatre will also receive new Alvo chairs from COR, extending the collaboration into another important guest area. Together, these interventions demonstrate how a refurbishment can bring visual and functional improvements through a combination of new furnishings, reupholstery and the retention of selected existing pieces.

The approach also has a practical sustainability dimension. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises plans to donate sofas and armchairs removed during the refurbishment to a charitable organisation in Singapore. This will allow furniture that still has potential value to be reused beyond the ship, extending its useful life after the installation of the new interiors. The furniture renewal forms part of a wider programme planned for EUROPA 2 during the same shipyard period. Approximately 250 suites will receive updated colour schemes, while the Atrium and Piano Bar are scheduled for modernisation. The Sakura and Elements speciality restaurants will undergo visual improvements, with additional changes planned for Elements. Technical upgrades and maintenance work will accompany the guest-facing modifications. These developments are especially relevant for a ship positioned in the upper segment of the luxury cruise market. In this category, accommodation plays a central role in the experience, and the quality of the interior environment contributes directly to a guest's perception of comfort. Furniture must combine visual elegance with durability, ergonomic design and the ability to withstand continuous use over many years.
The collaboration between Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, COR and Cubik3 illustrates the importance of continuity in ship design. EUROPA 2's refurbishment will introduce new materials, furnishings and details within an established architectural framework. The result is intended to maintain the ship's recognisable atmosphere while offering a refreshed experience for returning guests.

There is also something particularly interesting about the role of furniture in contemporary luxury cruising. A sofa may appear to be a relatively minor detail when compared with restaurants, pools or expansive public areas, yet it is often one of the most frequently used elements of a suite. It is where guests read, enjoy the view through panoramic windows, spend time with travelling companions or simply relax after a day ashore. Its proportions, support, upholstery and relationship with the surrounding space all influence how comfortable and welcoming the accommodation feels. In this sense, the investment in custom-designed seating reflects a broader understanding of luxury as an experience shaped by everyday details. High-quality materials and carefully considered design have a lasting influence on the atmosphere of a ship, particularly during longer voyages when guests spend more time in their suites.
With its scheduled refurbishment in Singapore, EUROPA 2 is preparing for another stage in its evolution. The installation of approximately 250 bespoke COR sofas, together with improvements to selected suites and public spaces, will refresh the vessel's interior environment while preserving the design identity that has characterised it since its introduction. For guests returning to EUROPA 2 after January 2027, the changes are likely to be most noticeable in the familiar surroundings of their suites, where the combination of craftsmanship, comfort and contemporary design will continue to define the ship's interpretation of luxury at sea.
