TradeWinds: Concrete Actions for Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism has become a global goal for the future, and TradeWinds stands among the foremost examples of how the luxury industry can embrace sustainability in a tangible way.

With a commitment rooted long before the UN issued its global call to accelerate action against climate change, TradeWinds is one of the most advanced companies in the field of sustainable sailing cruises. With the ambition to redefine luxury responsibly, TradeWinds has developed a series of groundbreaking initiatives that go far beyond the adoption of eco-friendly technologies.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2023, TradeWinds is a company that has always placed the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems at the heart of its mission. Starting in 2019, TradeWinds made a bold decision: to halt the purchase of new vessels until clean propulsion technology had become sufficiently advanced. A move that paved the way for the integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, into the world of nautical luxury.

The next step in this sustainable evolution arrived in January 2024 with the launch of AURORA, the world’s first yacht equipped with intelligent electric propulsion. From that moment on, TradeWinds has continued to expand its fleet with other electric yachts, such as Twenty5, Ohana, and Hadali, custom-built by the prestigious French shipyard Fountaine Pajot. The company’s goal is clear: by 2036, all of its more than 40 yachts will be fully sustainable and primarily powered by electricity, minimizing the environmental impact of nautical operations.

Contrary to what one might think, TradeWinds’ electric yachts do not compromise on luxury or comfort. In fact, they offer a quiet, vibration-free sailing experience thanks to solar energy, hydraulic generators, and wind turbines. Travelers can enjoy a unique, low-emission journey without giving up the comforts of an elegant cruise.

Sustainability is not just about technology—it is also embedded in the company culture. Through the TradeWinds Academy, the company ensures that all crew members and staff are trained to integrate eco-friendly practices into their daily work. From reducing harmful chemicals to cutting single-use plastics, every detail is designed to lower environmental impact while also educating clients on the value of sustainable choices. As Ricardo Flores, Vice President of Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations, states, “Every choice matters.”

At a time when sustainability is one of the most urgent global challenges, TradeWinds has not only answered the United Nations’ call but has also anticipated the future, setting standards that go beyond traditional tourism.
