AIDACruises Honored at the ESG Shipping Awards 2025
This past May, during the ESG Shipping Awards ceremony held in Athens, AIDA Cruises stood out as a key player, earning two highly prestigious international accolades.
The German company, a long-time leader in maritime sustainability, received two Silver Awards: one in the “Technology Leader” category for its use of low-emission biofuels, and another in the “Community Leader” category for its social initiative, AIDA Cruise & Help.

AIDA Cruises was awarded the Silver “Technology Leader” Award for its pioneering use of biofuels aboard its vessels. In particular, AIDAprima became the first large cruise ship to be powered by a blend of marine biofuel—an innovation that, according to manufacturers, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85%. This achievement marks a milestone in the energy transition of the cruise industry and aligns with the company’s goal—shared with Carnival Corporation & plc—to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
However, for AIDA Cruises, sustainability goes beyond technology. Its social commitment was recognized with a second Silver Award in the “Community Leader” category, thanks to the AIDA Cruise & Help initiative. Launched in 2019, the project is focused on improving access to education in developing countries and in regions visited by AIDA ships. To date, 80 schools have been funded worldwide, giving more than 12,000 children the real opportunity for a better future.
Dirk Inger, SVP Public Affairs, Communication & Sustainability at AIDA Cruises, expressed deep satisfaction for the awards, emphasizing that they validate the company’s dedication to both social responsibility and technological innovation. He also highlighted that these honors prove AIDA Cruises’ efforts are truly recognized and appreciated on an international level.

The ESG Shipping Awards, presented annually in ten categories, celebrate maritime companies that demonstrate outstanding contributions in Environmental protection, Social responsibility, and Ethical Governance. The double recognition received by AIDA Cruises reflects an integrated approach to sustainability—combining cutting-edge technology, ethical engagement, and positive social impact.
With these awards, AIDA Cruises reaffirms its position as a global leader in sustainable cruising. The company not only innovates in propulsion systems and emission reduction, but also actively contributes to building a fairer and more inclusive world. The ESG Shipping Awards 2025 are not just a milestone, but a further motivation to continue working toward a future in which travel means taking care of both the planet and its people.
