AE Expeditions: Towards Regenerative Ocean Tourism
AE Expeditions has embraced a significant evolution in its approach to sustainability, moving away from the traditional carbon offset model in favor of a new circular paradigm focused on decarbonization and environmental and social regeneration.
This new approach no longer simply aims to “neutralize harm” after it occurs, but seeks to create a tangible positive impact from the very start of operations, emphasizing active emission reduction and the regeneration of ecosystems and local communities. According to Sasha Buch, Sustainability Manager at AE Expeditions, this new model goes beyond mere harm neutralization and focuses on actively generating positive outcomes for the environment and local communities.

Traditionally, many companies have relied on carbon offset strategies, attempting to balance the impact of their activities through external initiatives such as tree planting or purchasing carbon credits. AE Expeditions has instead chosen to change course, focusing on a more integrated and proactive approach. The company primarily aims to reduce emissions at their source, making operations smarter and more sustainable through the adoption of innovative technologies and responsible operational decisions. Its ships are designed to minimize environmental impact, with optimized fuel consumption and experimentation with biofuels, while advanced design features, such as the Ulstein X-BOW, enhance energy efficiency during navigation. Virtual anchoring systems also help protect the seabed, while single-use plastics are completely eliminated on board.
However, reducing emissions alone is not enough: AE Expeditions is also committed to environmental and social regeneration, seeking to restore ecosystems and support local communities. This new approach translates into support for conservation and restoration projects, the promotion of scientific research, and the adoption of circular practices, with the goal of giving back to nature and people more than it takes.
At the heart of this new strategy is the Ocean Regeneration Program, designed to restore marine ecosystems and remove harmful waste from the oceans. For every passenger, staff member, or special guest participating in an expedition, AE funds the planting of one unit of marine life and the removal of one kilogram of ocean-bound waste.
Forecasts for 2026 indicate tangible, measurable results: AE Expeditions expects to plant over 7,000 units of kelp, seagrass, and coral, while more than 7,000 kilograms of waste will be prevented from entering the oceans. These efforts are not carried out in isolation but in collaboration with global organizations such as Seatrees, Veritree, and CleanHub, which ensure that regeneration initiatives are integrated with local communities, valuing their knowledge and supporting economic prosperity alongside environmental protection.
The projects span several regions worldwide, selected based on ecological needs and the presence of local communities that can actively participate. Kelp forests are being restored in Canada and Portugal, while seagrass meadows are being regenerated in Spain. Coral restoration efforts are concentrated in Indonesia and Costa Rica, and plastic recovery takes place in Indonesia’s Coral Triangle and other coastal communities. As Sasha Buch notes, “The partners we’ve chosen work closely with local communities. We value their knowledge and aim to ensure economic prosperity alongside long-term environmental protection.”

These locations also complement and strengthen AE Expeditions’ established polar collaborations, enabling the company to expand its commitment from the Arctic and Antarctic regions to a global network of sustainable expeditions that combine adventure with tangible positive impact.
AE Expeditions does not limit its sustainability efforts to projects on land; it brings environmental responsibility directly on board its ships, which are designed to minimize the ecological impact of every expedition. The vessels feature the advanced Ulstein X-BOW design, allowing for more efficient navigation and significantly reduced fuel consumption. Environmental protection extends to the seabed as well: thanks to virtual anchoring systems, the ships avoid damaging underwater ecosystems during stops. Onboard initiatives include the complete elimination of single-use plastics and the adoption of green practices that permeate every aspect of operations.
Furthermore, AE Expeditions is a certified B Corporation, a recognition that attests to its adherence to high standards of verified social and environmental performance, transparency, and corporate accountability. This certification underscores the company’s concrete commitment to transforming every journey not only into a unique experience for passengers but also into a genuine opportunity to generate positive value for the planet and local communities.
Precisely on the occasion of B Corp Month in March, AE Expeditions organized a series of morning webinars in the United Kingdom for its commercial partners to explore what it means to be a B Corp-certified expedition operator. The sessions featured the participation of Sasha Buch, Sustainability Manager at AE Expeditions, who shared insights on the company’s sustainability framework, operational practices, and long-term commitment to responsible adventure travel.
During the webinars, the standards underlying B Corp certification were examined, along with the ongoing responsibilities required to maintain it and how AE’s expeditions can generate positive environmental and social impact in the remote regions they explore. As a certified B Corp, AE Expeditions integrates sustainability across all operations, from ship design and technological innovation to Citizen Science programs, which actively involve explorers in collecting data to support global research initiatives.

By shifting from simple carbon offsetting to regeneration, AE Expeditions introduces an innovative model for the travel industry: a journey is no longer just a unique experience for the traveler, but also an opportunity to restore ecosystems, support communities, and reduce emissions.
Each expedition thus becomes an occasion to contribute to the health of the planet, with measurable and transparent impact. This approach redefines the concept of sustainable travel, demonstrating that it is possible to combine adventure, luxury, and environmental responsibility in a tangible and innovative way.
