AE Expeditions: A Step Forward in Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is becoming an increasingly central issue, as shipping companies are called upon to respond to growing concerns about climate change by finding innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of their operations.

AE Expeditions, an Australian leader in small-ship adventure tourism, has recently reached an important milestone on its path to decarbonization by successfully completing its first biofuel trial on one of its vessels. This experiment represents not only a concrete step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also a benchmark model for the entire maritime sector.

Expeditions on small ships, often conducted in ecologically sensitive areas, carry a particular responsibility: to preserve the ecosystems visited while ensuring authentic and safe travel experiences. With over 33 years of experience in the industry, AE Expeditions has made environmental protection a core value, integrating it into every aspect of its operations. Being a Certified B Corporation and maintaining certified Carbon Neutrality are tangible testaments to this commitment.

In May 2025, the Sylvia Earle, a purpose-built expedition vessel, carried out a pioneering test using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as an alternative fuel to conventional marine diesel. HVO, produced entirely from used cooking oil, is a biofuel that, according to the Proof of Sustainability certification, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 90% compared to conventional fuels. The refueling took place in Valencia, Spain, and the ship operated for several days along the Spanish coast running on 100% HVO. The trial was carefully managed, involving tank cleaning and a gradual transition to avoid technical issues, which in fact did not occur. The vessel’s performance remained optimal, confirming the viability of this technology in maritime operations.

AE Expeditions’ decision to test sustainable biofuels fits within a broader journey of innovation and environmental responsibility. As highlighted by Sasha Buch, the company’s Sustainability Manager, reducing emissions is an essential priority, especially considering that many expeditions take place in climatically vulnerable areas.

The limited availability of alternative fuels remains a significant obstacle, but the company intends to continue with further trials and implementations as resources become more accessible. The goal is to help create a broader and more sustainable market for these fuels, while simultaneously promoting greater awareness and concrete actions within the maritime sector.

AE Expeditions does not merely experiment with new fuels; the company has built its reputation on combining cutting-edge technologies with rigorous environmental care. Its vessels are designed to minimize environmental impact, integrating advanced energy management systems and adopting sustainable operational practices. Moreover, AE’s approach involves strong engagement with local communities and guests, offering travel experiences that not only respect ecosystems but also educate and raise awareness about conservation and sustainability issues. This philosophy makes each expedition an opportunity to promote responsible and conscious tourism.

With its vessels set to return to Europe in 2026, AE Expeditions has already planned further trials to continue refining the use of biofuels and other green technologies. The new ship, Douglas Mawson, scheduled to set sail in December 2025, represents a further evolution of the fleet, expanding the possibilities for sustainable exploration. These developments demonstrate the company’s determination to maintain a leadership role in the sector, not only by offering high-quality adventure travel but also by serving as a concrete example of environmental responsibility.

AE Expeditions’ first biofuel trial undoubtedly marks a significant step forward in the fight against climate change in the maritime sector. It shows that it is possible to combine technological innovation, operational efficiency, and environmental respect—even in complex contexts such as adventure expeditions. The Sylvia Earle’s experience with HVO is not just a technical success but a clear message to the industry: sustainability is a journey that requires courage, investment, and collaboration but can lead to tangible and lasting results.

AE Expeditions thus confirms itself as a pioneer in sustainable tourism, ready to chart a course toward a future where a passion for exploration and love for the planet go hand in hand.
