Cruise lines have become increasingly adept at connecting guests with the right experiences at the right moments throughout the customer lifecycle.
As brands invest in more personalized and relevant interactions before, during and after every sailing, they're extending the guest relationship well beyond the booking itself.
That evolution raises an interesting question: How do you stay relevant between one vacation and the next?
One answer may lie in something cruise lines already create extraordinarily well: memories.
Hospitality companies have long understood that memorable experiences are the foundation of repeat business. Increasingly, however, customer experience leaders argue that the memory itself deserves just as much attention as the experience that created it.
Memories Drive Loyalty
Annette Franz, founder and CEO of CX Journey who’s worked with global brands like J.D. Power and Fidelity Investments, describes this emerging concept as "memory-driven customer experience," where brands intentionally help customers relive meaningful moments long after the original interaction. Nike, Starbucks, Net-a-Porter and FedEx are all engaging in programs that remind customers about their first brand experiences and all the feel-good moments since.
"Memory-driven CX—using the past to spark joy in the present—is quietly reshaping how brands forge unbreakable customer bonds," she said.
The science behind those findings is equally powerful. Nostalgia has been shown to trigger dopamine release, creating positive emotional associations that increase trust and strengthen long-term brand affinity.
For cruise guests, what happens after they return home determines how long that emotional connection lasts. Every time a family revisits photos from a Caribbean sailing, an Alaskan adventure or a milestone anniversary celebrated onboard, they're not simply remembering a vacation. They're reconnecting with the cruise brand that made those moments possible.
A Model That's Already Gaining Momentum
One way cruise lines are leveraging memory-driven CX is through a partnership with Treering Memories. The U.S.-based company specializes in curated, personalized keepsake memory books and has partnerships with Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.
Each partnership has been tailored to the cruise line's guest experience strategy, reinforcing the idea that memory books are not simply another retail product; they're an extension of the vacation itself.
The white-labeled memory books are custom-branded, incorporating the line's logo, colors and visual identity throughout the experience.
But beyond brand customization, no two memory books are alike because Treering’s digital platform allows guests to use photos from professional onboard photographers and upload their own photos directly from a smart phone.
Demand for this level of personalization is significant: a 2024 study by Deloitte found that 80% of consumers surveyed prefer brands that offer personalized experiences and reported spending 50% more with those companies.

The Camera Roll Problem
Personalized memory books solve a problem no one likes to acknowledge: most of our memories are buried on our smart phones or in cloud storage.
According to research reported by TechRadar, Americans take an astonishing 230 billion photos every year, yet 70% say they never revisit those photos again. More than half of consumers have even deleted photos because they ran out of storage.
For cruise lines, that's a strategic opportunity. Every photo represents a moment your brand helped create. Enabling guests to meaningfully engage with those memories extends the cruise experience and keeps your brand present every time those memories are relived.
Two Opportunities for Cruise Brands
Treering has developed flexible partnership models that allow cruise operators to integrate memory books into their guest experience in ways that align with their commercial objectives.
1. Expanding Onboard Photo Revenue
Today's photo programs already capture extraordinary moments throughout the voyage. By adding a professionally designed memory book to the existing photo offering, cruise lines can increase the value of each guest purchase while providing a premium keepsake that extends well beyond individual prints or digital downloads. Rather than purchasing photos alone, guests receive a curated story of their vacation.
2. Elevating Premium Packages and Loyalty Programs
Memory books also create compelling value-added benefits for premium cabins, suite guests, loyalty tiers and promotional packages. Receiving a personalized cruise memory book as a surprise thank-you is an emotional reminder of an exceptional experience and one that naturally reinforces the desire to travel again.
From Souvenir to Strategic Asset
Unlike a T-shirt or coffee mug, a personalized memory book doesn't simply remind guests where they traveled; it tells the story of what happened there. It captures family milestones, shared adventures, unexpected moments, and old and new traditions. The cruise line isn't simply remembered; it becomes part of the family's narrative.
Experiences become memories. Memories become loyalty. And loyalty becomes revenue. In an increasingly competitive market, the brands that earn a place in their guests' memories are the ones most likely to earn their next booking.
