Nassau Cruise Port Supports the Youth of Junkanoo
On the occasion of the 2026 Junior Junkanoo Parade, one of the most cherished events of the local tradition, the cruise port supported the participation of C.H. Reeves Junior High School with a dedicated donation, reaffirming its commitment to celebrating Bahamian cultural heritage and promoting the development of the local community.
As C.H. Reeves Junior High School prepared to compete in the 2026 Junior Junkanoo Parade with the goal of achieving a historic third consecutive victory, Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) donated $2,000 to support the students as part of the More Than a Welcome community program. The initiative sent a clear message of the port’s vision, increasingly focused not only on serving as a gateway for international visitors but also as an active promoter of Bahamian culture and identity.

The contribution enabled the students to cover expenses related to costume creation, materials purchase, and the preparation required to bring to life the energy, creativity, and storytelling power of Junkanoo, one of the country’s most iconic cultural traditions. The parade took place on Thursday, January 29, along Bay Street, in the heart of Downtown Nassau, transforming the city center into a vibrant explosion of music, color, and cultural pride.
According to Maya Nottage, Regional Marketing Director, the More Than a Welcome program aimed primarily to support the community in an authentic and lasting way. Junkanoo was not seen simply as a folkloric event, but as a living form of culture, passed down from generation to generation, capable of telling the story, resilience, and spirit of the Bahamas.
Supporting C.H. Reeves Junior High School thus carried both symbolic and practical significance: investing in young people means ensuring continuity for a tradition that represents one of the pillars of national identity, guaranteeing that rhythm, craftsmanship, music, and community spirit continue to thrive in the future.
Throughout the initiative, Nassau Cruise Port emphasized that its approach to community engagement went beyond a simple financial contribution. The stated goal was to build long-term relationships with schools, artists, and cultural and environmental organizations, supporting projects that strengthen local identity, promote sustainability, and create new opportunities for youth expression. This collaborative model has helped position the port as a committed actor in the social and cultural well-being of the area, integrating tourism development with a positive and lasting impact on the Bahamian community.

The leadership of C.H. Reeves Junior High School also expressed deep gratitude for the support received. Principal Dr. Sterling McPhee highlighted that the donation came at a critical moment, enabling students to prepare fully for the Junior Junkanoo Parade. Nassau Cruise Port’s contribution was seen as an investment not only in the event itself but also in the students’ education and personal development, strengthening their sense of belonging and pride in being Bahamian.
Through the More Than a Welcome initiative, Nassau Cruise Port has demonstrated how a world-class tourism infrastructure can play an active role in preserving and promoting local culture. Support for C.H. Reeves Junior High School and the 2026 Junior Junkanoo Parade provided a tangible example of how hospitality, cultural identity, and social responsibility can coexist within a single vision.
