The Port of Barcelona is taking another step towards modernizing its cruise infrastructure. The Port Authority’s Board of Directors has approved the project submitted by Barcelona Cruise Port, part of Global Ports Holding (GPH), for the development of a new Terminal C and the extension of its concession agreement.
The project involves a total investment of €104.5 million, of which more than €50 million will be allocated to the construction of the new terminal. Covering an area of 11,253 m², the facility will be located at Adossat Wharf. It has been designed to enhance the passenger experience and improve port operational efficiency, while incorporating solutions aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.
Key features of the project include solar power generation systems and Onshore Power Supply (OPS) infrastructure, which will allow ships to connect to the shore-side electricity grid while alongside in port. This technology makes it possible to reduce the use of auxiliary engines during port calls, helping to limit emissions and the environmental impact of cruise operations.
Alongside approval of the new terminal, the extension of Barcelona Cruise Port’s concession has also been confirmed. The agreement will remain in force until 2050, with the option of a further extension until 2053. This arrangement strengthens Global Ports Holding’s presence at the Catalan port and confirms its long-term commitment to working with the Port Authority.
Francesc Grau, GPH Regional Director West Med and General Manager of Barcelona Cruise Port, highlighted the significance of the approval, describing it as an important milestone in the partnership and relationship of trust established with the Port of Barcelona. He also emphasized that the new Terminal C will provide a modern, efficient and sustainable facility, enhancing the cruise experience while supporting the city’s development as a leading international cruise destination.
The project is part of a broader plan to transform cruise infrastructure at Adossat Wharf, in line with the Port Authority’s long-term vision of developing more modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable facilities. With the new Terminal C and the extension of its concession, Barcelona Cruise Port is further strengthening its role in the port’s development, focusing on infrastructure investment and technological solutions capable of meeting the sector’s future needs.
