Magellan Discoverer represents a new era in Antarctic expeditions. Born from the pioneering vision of Antarctica21, this next-generation boutique vessel marks a significant evolution in polar navigation, combining luxury, cutting-edge technology, and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Built at the ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Chile, Magellan Discoverer is South America’s first hybrid diesel-electric polar vessel, highlighting a major step forward in sustainable Antarctic exploration.
On board, guests are welcomed into an intimate and refined environment, perfectly aligned with Antarctica21’s signature philosophy. The 40 cabins, spread across three passenger decks, are divided into five categories and all feature a private balcony, king-size beds convertible into twin beds, a sitting area, private bathroom, and individually controlled heating. Every element of the interior design has been carefully crafted to offer a warm, contemporary, and efficient atmosphere, ideal for those seeking to explore Antarctica in full comfort.
With a PC6 ice class rating and a length of 94 meters, Magellan Discoverer is built to safely navigate the challenging conditions of polar regions, ensuring a stable and smooth cruising experience. Its hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system (2 engines of 1,800 kW) allows it to cruise at 14 knots in open water, significantly reducing emissions and fuel consumption. In compliance with Tier III emission standards, the ship incorporates heat recovery systems to optimize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. An additional innovation is the onboard wet science lab, designed to support field research in Antarctica and encourage collaboration between tourism and science.
